What
the Heck Happened with Cable TV?
Is it just
me or have you noticed that cable TV is inundated with commercials?
I
can't seem to enjoy it much anymore, the same commercials over and
over; it looks very similar to the major broadcasting stations.
However, they don't charge you a large fee to get their service.
Remember
when cable was first introduced, it was the greatest service to come
along and provide non-commercial television viewing.
Their
pitch to viewers was, if you wished to enjoy programs without
commercials, then pay for the service and that's what you will get. It
was a nominal fee and you even got a movie channel to see movies which
had recently made their run in the theaters.
This was a good deal and people ate it up!
The
best part of the programming was to be able to sit down, enjoy watching
television and not be bombarded with pesky commercials; the regular
free channels had been bothering you with. That's
how those channels generated their revenue, through commercials or go
bust, that was fine because you didnt have to pay for them.
Where we
are today, the cable TV prices are ridiculously high and we
are
bombarded with commercials to boot! It
appears the cable companies have gone full circle to resemble the free
broadcasting networks, but make you pay for it.
This is why you hear more and more people complain and say
they Hate Cable !
What
about the movie selections, to me cable movies now are nothing more
than re-runs of films that are at times 20 or more years old. If you
want to see anything recently released they want you to pay for it also
with pay per view. Don't you
think that's a bit much? You
mean to tell me that my premium service only entitles me to see re runs
and 20 yr old movies, that to me is a rip-off.
Well I for one
am
glad there is Satellite TV, with cheaper pricing, better movies, and
more HDTV channels to view. Hey
if they can offer it, so could cable. In
my opinion, the cable companies just got fat and lazy with their large
embedded customer base. It's
also my opinion they have become much like the large broadcast networks
and lost their agility within the marketplace.
The
Satellite TV providers are more like how the cable companies once were,
aggressive to get market share and build up their customer base with
better service and pricing.
Are
you kidding, there is a war going on and the customer benefits by
taking advantage by switching to Satellite TV and avail themselves of
the perks. Get free
equipment and installation, months of free service, DVR's and
all the other goodies they offer in the deals.
Why
waste your money with cable, they arent earning it anymore, they
probably bring in more revenue from their advertisers than with
subscriptions to their service. On
the other hand, Satellite TV companies are actively seeking your
business and their offers reflect it.
In
summary, I think the major cable TV companies have fallen into the big
corporate mind set of growing large and then taking advantage of their
customers when they feel safe from competition.
This is why people HATE CABLE!
We all saw it with the large Bell
operating companies when they were charging you an arm and a leg for
telephone services.Competition
is the key in the marketplace to pricing, services and the growth of
technology.That's my opinion
on what the heck happened to cable TV.
